We hope that more and more of you are already aware of the fact that a clean and fresh mattress is a must! First of all, let us start with the consideration that you are spending at least 7-8 hours of your day/night in almost direct contact with your mattress, both being separated from each other with a thin layer of cotton or whatever material sheet. Of course, for such a long period of time in almost a direct contact, everything from you can go to your mattress (sweat, for example), while everything from your mattress can come back to you (bacteria and allergens, for example). Many people still do not take this too seriously, but regular and thorough mattress cleaning is as important as regular and thorough carpet or curtain cleaning, because, after all, these are some of the favorite places of allergens, bacteria and all the dust and dirt in the world.
Mattress can be gross (let’s not describe how gross they actually can be!). But you don’t want your mattress gross, right? So, you have to clean it! Professional services are not always an option for a number of reasons and, in general, most of the time the result of a professional mattress cleaning will be the same as if you try and clean your mattress on your own, following this easy, simple and very effective method!
First things first, vacuuming your mattress at least once a week (both sides!) will help you control and significantly reduce the dust mite population, which is one of our main goals if we want to have a healthy and safe home. It will help you a lot if you invest into plastic mattress coverings on your mattress because that way you will seal it and make sure that not a single bacteria family is living their happy life in there.
Making your own mattress cleaning solution will save your day (and night, especially), we promise! It is really easy and you need only products that you already have at home, or you can easily find at the store. All you need is baking soda with a few drops of essential oil poured in, we recommend you to use lavender oil since it has natural antibacterial purposes, it smells very nice, neutralising odours and it will also help you relax and sleep better.
Put 1 cup of baking soda into a small jar and add 5 drops of lavender essential oil (or an essential oil of your choice). Give the substance a good shake and mix both ingredients. This amount is more than enough for treating half of a king-sized bed and you can always make some more of the mixture if you need to.
Start with removing all of your bedding and do not put it back, when your mattress is already cleaned and disinfected, until you do not wash it in hot water, so you can kill all bacteria buildups. Then pour enough baking soda through a sifter or strainer to lightly dust the surface of your mattress and leave it to sit for at least one hour, so the baking soda has enough time to draw all the moisture, odour and dirt. Using the upholstery attachment of your vacuum thoroughly vacuums the surface of your mattress and you are done! Simply put a freshly washed set of bedding and we wish you have sweet dreams!
